MUSINGS:
Allostatic Load

Allostatic load is a biological phenomenon wherein persistent stress affects neurotransmitters and hormones, disrupting internal processes that usually keep us physically and mentally healthy.

When functioning normally, our allostatic response temporarily changes bodily functions to facilitate effective coping in challenging situations. When we have an allostatic load, this response turns on, but doesn't turn off, eventually resulting in physical or mental illness.

People with allostatic load are more likely to have cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental health conditions, including general degradation of cognitive and emotional function.

On average, people with allostatic load live shorter lives.

Because allostatic load is the result of persistent stress, it disproportionately affects people experiencing marginalization, discrimination, or oppression. This includes low-income people, Global Majority/BIPOC people (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), LGBTQ+ folx, and other vulnerable groups. It's also more likely to affect adults who experienced childhood abuse or neglect.

Allostatic load can be reduced by engaging in health-promoting behaviors, such as improved diet, physical activity, and cognitive stimulation. Unfortunately, these changes can be particularly difficult for people with allostatic load, for the same reasons allostatic load developed in the first place.

Allostatic load affects individuals, but its roots lie in social inequality. The solution is not curative, but preventive, and that solution is social justice.
